Self-service test environments through CI
Built an internal tool that provisions a test environment, prepares the OS, runs tests, and returns logs through CI.
Engineering work undertaken in employment. Company names and identifying details are omitted.
Problem
Testing a change involves several connected tasks: creating an environment, preparing the operating system, running tests, and making the results available to the engineer. Those steps need to work together as a repeatable workflow.
My contribution
I built an internal tool that connects VM provisioning, OS setup, test execution, and log collection through CI. Engineers trigger a CI job to start a run. The tool handles the sequence from environment creation through test execution.
Outcome
Engineers can initiate the workflow themselves and retrieve test logs as CI artifacts. The result is a self-service test-environment workflow with its entry point and output in CI, fitting into the team's existing development process.
